“Why Willie Mae Thornton Matters”

*PRE-RECORDED*

Originally aired on October 12, 2023, on KPFK-90.7 FM (Pacifica) in Los Angeles.

Lynnee Denise – DJ, scholar, artist and daughter of Black Los Angeles – has written a new biography of the blues artist popularly known as Big Mama Thornton. Thru 13 essays and an epilogue Denise gives us a queer, Black “biography in essays” about the performer who gave us “Hound Dog,” and “Ball and Chain,” before Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin, and a few other songs that changed the course of American music. By honoring her given name of Willie Mae Thornton, Denise takes us on a journey of reclamation and respect.
